Girondins-Bordeaux of France striker, Josh Maja has reeled out a long line of achievements he hopes to pull off as a regular player in the Super Eagles, as he believes he could aim for the sky once he finally settles down as a full-fledged Nigerian international, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although he has a single non-competitive Nigeria cap to his name since popping into the bright spotlight as top scorer at Sunderland of England, from where he moved to Bordeaux last year, Maja believes he has a rosy international future ahead of him.
With that ambition top of his mind, Maja decaled that he is determined to make the best of his next season in the French Ligue 1, as he wants to finally seal his place in the Super Eagles and then go on to help Nigeria make history.
Although his days at Bordeaux have not been as prolific and fruitful as he had at Sunderland, Maja was handed a call-up by Eagles’ gaffer, Gernot Rohr, and made his debut for the three-time African champions in a friendly against Ukraine last September, but the 21-year-old hitman, who scored eight goals and provided three assists in 24 matches across all competitions last term, is angling for a busy international career ahead of him.
Ahead of the new season in France, Maja is already looking at how he can help Bordeaux do a lot better than their 12th position finish last season and possibly compete effectively for the Ligue 1 title, while also working hard to do better with the Matmut Atlantique outfit; in order to get more chances to play for the Super Eagles and help the Nigerian side achieve more success.
Maja told BBC Sport Africa: “I’m familiar with my roots. I went to Nigeria a few times when I was young, and in the next few years, I’ll be going again. The Nigerian team has always had quality, but now there are a lot of young talents playing, so the future is very bright for us.
“Playing on an international stage was a dream of mine and to represent my country and make my family proud. Hopefully the opportunity comes to play and help them make history. Playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues and performing well will improve my chances.
“I’ve settled in well. I’ve adapted to the playing style and culture of the league and I’m hoping to play more games in the future. It’s a great experience in a top league.”
