Everton of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi will look up to next Sunday, June 21 for the chance to help his side try and slow down their Merseyside rivals, Liverpool in their surge to the English Premier League title, as both sides go for their derby early in the season’s restart, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Iwobi was quite inconsistent in and out of The Toffees’ starting line-up before the current season was forced to go on break by coronavirus, even sometimes missing the match day squad all together, the Super Eagles’ star would fancy his chances of getting back into the scheme of things in time for the Merseyside Derby.
It would be a huge chance for the former Arsenal of England sensation to stage a bold claim back to reckoning with his club and placate their fans, while also proving his value in their bid to slow down their rivals, who need just two more victories for them to be crowned EPL champions for the first time and winners of the overall top-flight title in England 30 years after they did it last.
While the season will restart on June 17, Liverpool will have the chance to lift their first title in 30 years when The Reds, who are currently leading the standings by 25 points, visit Iwobi’s side, but the Eagles’ playmaker is already preparing himself to play a key role in slowing them down.
Iwobi’s date with history will come when his side battle Liverpool on the first Sunday after the EPL season resumes, as fixtures released on Friday show that the Merseyside derby will hold at 7pm on June 21, behind closed doors at Goodison Park.
The Eagles’ star and his pals are due to be the home team, but the game may be moved to a neutral venue due to public health concerns, which could give Liverpool an advantage in their bid to build on their lead over second-placed Manchester City.
A preview of the game noted that Liverpool could yet win the EPL title in their clash with Iwobi’s side, but that would require Man City to lose at home to Arsenal on the first day of the league’s restart, which is with two outstanding matches coming up next Wednesday, June 17.
The preview adds: “As well as City’s clash with Arsenal, struggling Aston Villa will face European hopefuls Sheffield United. Liverpool are aiming to win a first English league championship since 1990, having yet to land the trophy during the Premier League era.
“Jurgen Klopp’s team currently hold a 25-point lead, needing a maximum of two wins from their remaining nine games to land the silverware. The league has been suspended since mid-March due to the COVID-19 crisis, with the last match played having been Leicester’s 4-0 home win over Villa on March 9.
“All matches will be played behind closed doors when action resumes. On the first Friday of the resumption, Manchester United head to London to face Tottenham, who are now managed by former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho. City then return to action on Monday, June 22.
“(That will be) when they host Burnley, followed by a full midweek programme from June 23-25, including Liverpool’s clash with Crystal Palace on the Wednesday. City travel to Chelsea on the Thursday. Another fixture with a venue still to be set is City’s home game against Liverpool on Thursday, July 2.”
