The motivating force that is expected to spur the home-based Eagles to a gallant outing next weekend against Mexico has been revealed by the squad’s stand-in coach, Augustine Eguavoen, megasportsarena.com reports.
While many Nigerian fans and analysts are of a unanimous view that the hastily assembled array of players from clubs in Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) cannot survive Mexico’s onslaught, Eguavoen is thinking otherwise.
Although he too has been described as match rusty as this level, as he last handled the Eagles some five years ago, the assistant captain in the Africa up of Nations winning squad at Tunisia ’94 insists they will not be disgraced next Saturday in Los Angeles, USA.
Rather than throw up his arms in surrender before the game is played, the star fondly called ‘Cerezo’ in his heyday went on to affirm that the lads he is currently drilling in Abuja will give their very best in order to pull off a shock result against the better rated El Tri.
The defender-turned-gaffer, who has been saddled with the ask ahead in his capacity as current technical director of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), added that that the home-based players have what it takes to impress and earn a shock result at LA Coliseum next Saturday.
He disclosed further that the spirit in camp is high and he is excited seeing the players talking about their unexpected invitations to the national team, which he believes is enough propelling for and motivation for them to do well against the Mexicans on July 3.
Eguavoen enthused: “There are huge potentials in the Nigeria domestic league players and I believe playing Mexico in USA is a big chance to showcase their talents to the world. After just three training sessions with these players, I am convinced that they can shock Mexico.
“From what I have seen so far in training and comments from the boys, I can assure you that these players are not going on site-seeing in America but to prove their mettle and enhance their chances of breaking into the main Super Eagles team as well as the CHAN team.”
