Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot ohr has given himself a personal target of reaching next year’s final at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, megasportsarena.com reports.
Speaking against the backdrop of his team’s emergence in Group D, alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau, Rohr posited that reaching the final is his first target and winning it would hen follow.
The Franco-German tactcian, however, added that he will only be able to state categorically whether his team would go for the trophy after going through the first stage of their preparations.
The former coach of Girondins-Bordeaux of France as well as the national teams of Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso added that he will require the best of efforts from his players in order to make his aspirations come true.
He, however, affirmed that his first target is reaching the final next January in Cameroon, but acknowledged that the three-time African champions will rely on the like of William Troost-Ekong, Emmanuel Dennis Bonaventure, Oghenekaro Etebo and Ahmed Musa to make it happen.
The competition, which is still tagged AFCON 2021, will be Rohr’s third major tournament as the Eagles’ coach, following his outings at the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 African showpiece, and the gaffer added that he will also rely heavily on Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi and Alex Iwobi.
He recounted how now retired Odion Jude Ighalo finished as top scorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, following which he and then captain, John Mikel Obi both announced their retirements from the squad, leaving Rohr to desire more players of their same quality.
Rohr admitted as much when he told Egyptian television channel, Ontime Sports: “We want the best and reach the final, after we got third place in the African Nations in Egypt in the last edition.
“Nigeria is now a strong team. We have the World Cup qualifiers until the end of the year, after which I will decide whether we will win the title or not.
“In every match, we are looking for players from our own generation, such as Ighalo, Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, and we have four players in Watford in England.”
