Brentford of England midfielder, Frank Onyeka has been knocked out of contention for the Super Eagles’ camp that opens this Monday in Lagos, after he tested positive for Coronavirus at hid base.
The positive COVID-19 test ruled the former FC Midtjylland of Denmark battler out of action with Brentford in the English Premier League and will now extend into national team duties.
This is because Onyeka will have to be in quarantine for at least 10 days, which means he will not be available for the Eagles’ upcoming matches against Liberia and Cape Verde in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Megasportsarena.com reports that he was set to return to the national team to challenge EPL rivals, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi of Leicester City and Oghenekaro Etebo of Watford.
The development, though, comes almost a year after Onyeka flopped on his Eagles’ debut against Algeria and his place in the latest roster is bound to be taken by FF Malmo of Sweden rookie, Innocent Bonke, who was listed as one of seven replacement players.
The 23-year-old Onyeka, who joined Thomas Frank’s side on a five-year deal from Midtjylland in July, started The Bees’ first two EPL fixtures against Arsenal and Crystal Palace, following which he was a second-half substitute in a 3-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers in the League Cup.
It was only this past Thursday that Onyeka, who made his debut for the three-time African champions in a friendly that ended in a 1-0 loss to Algeria in October 2020, was invited for the Eagles’ Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde
However, he had to be taken off his club’s squad list for their trip to Villa Park on Saturday due to his health status, following which he was replaced in the starting eleven by Saman Ghoddos, while DR Congo forward, Yoane Wissa was on the bench for the EPL game on Saturday.
