Getafe of Spain midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo has stated delight with his ability to mark the extension of his loan deal at the Spanish LaLiga side with a cracking goal last weekend, megasportsarena.com reports.
Barely 24 hours after news emerged that the former Warri Wolves of Delta State, Feirense of Portugal, Stoke City of England and Las Palmas of Spain battler will stay put at Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez outfit until the end of this season in July, he slammed home his first goal in The Land of The Armada.
He is still on loan from Stoke, but the original agreement had been that Getafe would keep him until the end of June, but that has now been prolonged by a month, because the season was on hold since March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and resumed just last week.
Before the season was halted at the height of COVID-19, Getafe had already expressed interest in signing Etebo permanently, but they are considering the financial implications of a deal for the Super Eagles’ star, especially under the prevailing effects of the coronavirus outbreak.
A full transfer is on hold for now, but it is another loan period for Etebo, who joined Getafe in the January transfer window and has gone on to make 10 appearances for the Spanish club in all competitions, nine of which have been in LaLiga, including this past Saturday, in which he scored during 1-1 draw with Eibar at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
Etebo, who has been capped 35 times by Nigeria and is under contract with City until June 30, 2023, opened his account with La Azulones to become the 21st Nigerian to score in the Spanish top-flight, after Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amuneke, Finidi George, Mutiu Adepoju, Ikechukwu Uche, Aide Brown Ideye, Odion Ighalo, Obafemi Martins, Isaac Success and Ramon Azeez et al.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who played 69 minutes of Saturday’s game, produced 41 touches on the ball, with 16 accurate passes at a ratio of 64% as well as one shot on and off-target, in what was his ninth league appearance for Getafe since his arrival in January.
He has played in every game for the club, except against Athletic Bilbao and Valencia, in which he had a knock and was unfit to make the matchday squad, but has six starts to his name from nine outings, six have been starts.
Saturday’s strike was Etebo’s first-ever in Spain, where he previously played for Las Palmas, for which he and made a total of 14 appearances on loan from Feirense, but he will have to do a lot more for The Azulones, who remain winless since the restart of La Liga.
Their first outing of the restart was a goalless draw at home to Espanyol, but they will look for more efforts from all their players and Etebo, who gave his side the lead after driving in the ball home from Angel Rodriguez’s assist in the 30th minute.
Etebo took to social media to celebrate his loan extension and historic goal, which was cancelled out by Charles Dias just before half-time, as he powered home a header from Sergi Enrich’s cross, but the Eagles’ star posted with delight: “Happy to get my first Getafe goal. Heads up lads.
