Nigeria’s only two medalists at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, Ese Brume and Blessing Oborududu have both received a message of commendation from the Association of Nigerian Women in Sports (NAWIS).
Megasportsarena.com reports that the message was issued by NAWIS president, Professor Florence Adeyanju, who congratulated Oborududu for winning a silver medal in women’s wrestling and Brume for her bronze medal in the female long jump.
She noted that both medals came as a result of outstanding performance by both internationally renowned athletes, which Adeyanju also noted made Nigeria proud as a country and team in and around the Games in Tokyo.
The NAWIS national president deducted further that both athletes succeeded through dint of hard work and dedication to duty, which combined to help them put their names and that of their country on the global sporting map.
Adeyanju also pointed out the role played by NAWIS is shaping the impact of female athletes in Nigerian sports, then went on to pledge that the body will remain unflinching in their support to the country’s competitors and teams.
The former vice-president of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) also noted that the country’s female athletes have always rescued the nation whenever the contingent is finding it difficult to garner medals at various international championships.
While also hailing the Tokyo 2020 organisers for being gender sensitive in the implementation of events and activities, as well as giving adequate recognition to equity, Adeyangu stressed that Brume and Oborududu must be celebrated for making Nigerians happy.
Adeyanju posited: “I want to salute Blessing Oborududu and Ese Brume for putting smiles on the faces of over 200 million Nigerians across the world by winning medals.
“Both of you have registered Nigeria’s name in the annals of History. NAWIS hereby felicitates with all Nigerians, women and sports stakeholders on this golden and memorable feat.
“We also greet all those who participated but narrowly missed the podium and all the entire Team Nigeria.
“We wish them good luck in future events and support to Nigeria teams is paramount and unrelenting.”
