Eguavoen Sets Plans In Motion For Victory In Tuesday’s Reverse Fixture

Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has set in motion a plan he believes would be good enough for victory against Ghana in Tuesday’s second leg of their 2022 World Cup qualifier, megasportsarena.com reports.

The Eagles will host Ghana’s Black Stars at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday and ‘Egu’ admitted it will be a tough fixture, as the winner over both legs will pick one of Africa’s five tickets to Qatar 2022.

While casting his mind back on highlights of Friday’s first leg, which ended goalless at Bab Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Eguavoen kept sealed lips over controversy that erupted after the match referee first gave and then reversed a penalty for handball by Black Stars’ midfielder, Iddrisu Baba.

The Moroccan ref changed his initial decision after spotting on VAR a foul that was committed by Kelechi Iheanacho on the Ghanaian prior to him handling the ball, much to the chagrin of the Nigerian players.

However, Eguavoen was careful not to criticize the referee for overturning the decision, as he recalled earlier having an issue with an arbiter during his playing days and it cost him what could have been a dream move to England.

That happened a year before the 1994 World Cup in USA, when the one fondly called ‘Cerezo’ during his heyday had agreed terms to join West Bromwich Albion, but he was suspended for six months after falling out with a referee in Belgium.

With that setback still fresh on his mind, ‘Egu’ opted to stay only on his thoughts about Friday’s barren draw, which he submitted was good enough for his team, as they now have the reverse fixture on home soil to wrap up the ticket to Qatar this Tuesday.

“I don’t like to speak about referees, because I was suspended at some point in time in my career.

“As a player I had it rough with the referee for bad decisions. I had a chance to go and play in England.

“I was suspended for a very long time. So, referees, I just leave them to their fate. I think it’s still good enough,” Eguavoen concluded.
