Nigeria’s men’s basketball national team, D’Tigers paid a solemn tribute to late music star, Sound Sultan (Olarewaju Fasasi) before their pre-Olympic Games international friendly against Australia, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although the Nigerian squad would end up losing the mach, which followed stunning victories against USA and Argentina in quick succession, the lads would feel satisfied with the role they played in honouring Sound Sultan, who was a basketball lover during his lifetime.
During his early days growing up in Satellite Town, Lagos, Sound Sultan was an ardent fan of basketball even before he became a music star, and he was never shy of rubbing shoulders with other lovers of the sport in areas like FESTAC Town and Bonny Camp, Victoria Island.
He was known to have sponsored many youth competitions and often hobnobbed with fellow-music star, Black Face (Augustine Ahmedu) at Bonny Camp, where Nigerian Basketball Premier League side, Dodan Warriors trained.
Consequently, in memory of the music icon, who died on Saturday in USA, D’Tigers’ players, coaches and officials all wore t-shirts with the picture of Sound Sultan and observed a minute’s silence in his honour before their game against Australia.
Sadly, Mike Brown’s side lost the game to the World No. 3 Australians 108-69, thereby marking the coach’s first loss since taking over the job in 2020; as the Aussies displayed grit and technical prowess that swept D’Tigers apart in the first quarter, taking a 13-point lead to end 26-13.
Australia continued their dominance in the second quarter ending with a comfortable 20-point lead at 49-29, after which they opened a 38-point lead to end the quarter 84-46, then clocking the 100-point mark to win by 39 points ending the game 108-69.
