Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has gained a recall to the Super Eagles ahead of next month’s resumption of matches in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, megasportsarena.com reports.
After being left out of reckoning for the Eagles’ international friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia earlier this month, Akpeyi has evolved into greater form with his Premier Soccer League (PSL) club in The Rainbow Nation and his performances have not gone unnoticed by Nigeria’s selectors.
The former Heartland of Owerri and Warri Wolves of Delta State shot-stopper has also recovered from a nasty injury that ruled him out of the last two matches of the past season and is back into reckoning as the number choice at Amakhosi.
With that in view, a report by Score Nigeria reveals that Akpeyi has been recalled to the Eagles for next month’s AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone, while Kaizer Chiefs also confirmed their icon’s invitation for the games in Benin City on November 13 and return leg in Freetown four days later.
The report adds: “He is one of six players for international duty from Kaizer Chiefs. This month, coach Gernot Rohr overlooked Akpeyi for friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia so as to take a much closer look at Sparta Rotterdam shot stopper Maduka Okoye.
“Rohr said he was impressed with Okoye and it now looks like a straight fight with Akpeyi, who was first choice at last year’s AFCON in Egypt. Cyprus-based Francis Uzoho, who was No 1 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has struggled for game time since his return from a long-term injury.”
