Calvin Bassey has won the Rangers Young Player of the Season award for 2021-22 after a breakthrough season at the Scottish giants, Megasportsarena.com reports
The Nigeria international defender played a crucial role as the Gers reached the final of the Scottish Cup where they will square up against Heart of Midlothian on May 21 at the Hampden Park, Glasgow.
“Thank God. It’s an honour and blessing to receive this reward for this amazing club/thank you to everyone that has and is helping me on this journey,” he tweeted.
Bassey had a breakthrough season this term at Rangers after joining the incumbent Scottish champions in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer from Leicester City U23s’.
He has played a total of 44 games across all competitions for Rangers this season, mostly operating at centre-back despite being a natural left-back. Bassey has quickly established himself as an important part of the Giovanni van Bronckhorst-led side, having started 40 of the 44 games he has played this season.
He is widely credited with providing Rangers with a defensive solidity that missed the services of Leon Balogun for the most part of the current campaign due to injury worries.
He made his Nigerian debut in the first leg of Nigeria’s ill fated World Cup Qualifier against the Black Stars of Ghana. Bassey started the 2nd leg the qualifiers in front of over 60,000 home fans at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja after impressing team handlers in the 1st leg in Kumasi.
