The Confederation of African Football (CAF) doping officer for Tuesday’s second leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off match between Nigeria and Ghana, Dr Joseph Kabungo, has died after mayhem greeted the Super Eagles failure to qualify for the Qatar showpiece.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Kabungo, a medical practitioner, slumped suddenly after the match at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja and gave up the ghost in hospital.
Ghanaian journalist, Saddick Adams quoted a CAF official as saying;
“Dr Kabungo had a cardiac arrest when walking towards the team dressing rooms and collapsed on the floor.
“Both teams’ doctors and other medical personnel administered CPR on him but after a while he was taken to the hospital and that’s when the terrible news was confirmed,”
In a post on Twitter by British-Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, his death was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.
Neither officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor CAF has confirmed the official’s death.
It was learnt that Kabungo’s family, the Zambia FA and the Government of Zambia had been informed.
