Bonke Receives Late Invitation To Battle Ghana, Omeruo Now Looks Good

1

FC Lorient of France midfielder, Innocent Bonke has received a belated invitation to the Super Eagles’ camp ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualification play-off against Ghana, while Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo is now looking good to feature as well.

This development comes in the wake of the confirmation that Leicester City of England star, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi will not be available for the first leg in Kumasi, Ghana and reverse fixture billed for Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Megasportsarena.com reports that, in a swift move to block that vacuum, Eagles’ interim technical adviser, Augustine Eguavoen has handed a late call-up to Bonke as a replacement for Ndidi, five days before the team line out for their 2022 World Cup playoff.

Ndidi will miss both games against the Black Stars after suffering a knee injury during Leicester’s 2-1 loss to Stade Rennes of France in a UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16 clash on Thursday.

Leicester’s coach, Brendan Rodgers left Ndidi out of his side’s 2-1 victory against visiting Brentford, having confirmed earlier that the midfielder could out of action for at least three weeks.

Bonke, who was discovered while playing for FF Malmo of Sweden, has been in the international wilderness since coming off the bench against Central African Republic in a World Cup qualifier back in October 2021, his second cap after getting his debut versus Cape Verde.

The soft-spoken rising star, who has started each of the last seven matches for Lorient in the French Ligue 1, will compete with Joe Aribo, Oghenekaro Etebo and Frank Onyeka for one of the Eagles’ starting spots in midfield.

On the other hand, Kenneth Omeruo received good news ahead of his side’s Spanish LaLiga 2 match with Sporting Gijon, as Leganes’ Tunisia gaffer, Mehdi Nafti provided an update on the stopper’s fitness.

Nafti disclosed that Omeruo resumed full training with his colleagues, thereby putting him in contention to be named in the matchday squad for the visit of Gijon.

That was in contrast with the previous development, when Omeruo was not available for selection in the last three games played by Leganes because he was recovering from an adductor problem.

Omeruo did not take to the field versus SD Amorebieta on February 21 due to suspension, having accumulated five yellow cards, but he will now report for international duty fit like a fiddle, according to his coach

Nafti expatiated: “Omeruo and Luis Perea are better, they have already completed two sessions with the team, and Borja Garcés is already perfect.”
