Glasgow Rangers of Scotland midfielder, Joe Aribo is targeting an immediate return to The Gers’ matchday squad, in time for action against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership, megasportsarena.com reports.
However, the club’s coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a different thought on his mind, as he says it may not be smart to send the former Charlton Athletic of England lad into the fray just yet.
The tactician from Netherlands is of a view that Aribo may need to wind down longer from his exertions at the Africa Cup of Nations and recover fully from the shock of Nigeria’s exit last Sunday at the feet of Tunisia.
Consequently, though, Aribo is already back in Glasgow he may not go straight into the squad for their Scottish Premiership match versus Livingston on Wednesday, as van Bronckhorst pointed out that the player’s availability will be determined after a fitness test.
At the ongoing AFCON in Cameroon, Aribo started three games and was on for 88 minutes in the Eagles’ shock 1-0 loss to Tunisia to exit the continental soccer showpiece in the round of 16, which van Bronckhorst acknowledged is a huge mental blow for the lad.
However, while van Bronckhorst admitted it is a boost being back with Aribo, who has scored three goals in seven league matches since the Dutchman took over from Steven Gerrard, the gaffer sympathized with the player over Nigeria’s early elimination from the tournament.
Van Bronckhorst stated: “For me, it’s good to have Joe back. For himself, it’s not been a good result at the weekend so it’s bad for Joe that he couldn’t play on in the tournament.
“He’s traveling back from Nigeria, so we have to assess him if it’s smart for him to be in the squad, but he will for sure be available from the weekend and of course after.”
