Everton of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi has declared that he is doing everything to cut a personal niche for himself, which he wants to be quite different from what his uncle, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha achieved during his heyday for club and country, megasportsarena.com reports.
Many pundits still use Okocha as a major reference point to what is expected of Iwobi, with complaints always trailing his inconsistent form, but the youngster has now stated emphatically that he just wants to be himself and play his own style.
He admitted during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that Okocha played a key role in shaping his career, as he watched the former Super Eagles’ captain a lot and was able to get several tips from the former Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany, Fernebahce of Turkey, PSG of France as well as ex-Bolton Wanderers and Hull City of England star.
The former Arsenal winger-cum-playmaker went on to point out how much inspiration he got from listening to Okocha and watching the two-time British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) African Player of The Year award winner play, but he insists he wants to follow his own style.
Iwobi stated: “I am proud to be associated with Jay Jay. He’s my uncle and I am proud of him; but I want to be myself. Jay Jay is Jay Jay and Iwobi is Iwobi; that’s what I want to be. I just want to be myself and do my own thing my own way; not because I am Jay Jay’s nephew. “
