Akwa United of Uyo ended the weekend top of the log in Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), despite playing a draw away to Rivers United of Port Harcourt on Sunday, megasportsarena.com reports.
The Promise Keepers kept on track for a first ever conquest of the Nigerian league title with a commanding performance in The Garden City, where they pulled off a 1-1 draw with their hosts.
The away draw with Rivers United ensured that Akwa United remain top of the standings with 61 points from 33 games.
Charles Atshimene pounced on a defensive mistake in the Rivers United defence to put his side ahead in the 53rd minute.
Bakary Bamba equalised for the hosts three minutes from time after he was teed up by substitute Fortune Omoniwari.
Same evening in the NPFL, Nasarawa United of Lafia maintained an unexpewcted grip on second position with a 1-0 win against visiting Mountain of Fire & Miracles Ministry (MFM) FC of Lagos.
Silas Nwankwo scored the decisive goal in the 15th minute, while Kano Pillars got a 2-0 home win against Dakkada of Uyo at Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna with Rabiu Ali and David Ebuka getting the goals.
In Aba, Enyimba rallied back from a goal down to beat Jigawa Golden Stars of Jalingo 2-1, even as the visitors took the lead through Bature Sani two minutes before the break.
Reuben Bala leveled scores for Enyimba two minutes after break, while Tosin Omoyele netted the winning goal in the 88th minute.
At Okigwe Township Stadium, Heartland of Owerri defeated Rangers of Enugu in the oriental derby, in which Chijoke Mbaoma gave Heartland the lead in the 11th minute.
Elijah Ani equalised for the visitors 11 minutes later, but Chijoke Akuneto fired home the winner eight minutes before the break.
