Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia attacker, Ahmed Musa marked Monday as an epochal date in history, as he recalled memories of his superb brace of goals for Nigeria against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and admitted he is thrilled anytime he remembers his well taken hits, megasportsarena.com reports.
It was a repeat of what the former Kano Pillars, VV Venlo of Holland, CSKA Moscow of Russia and Leicester City star did four years earlier at Brazil 2014, when he also scored a brace against Argentina, but he got a better ending with a 2-0 victory this time out.
It would have even been three goals for him during the game in Volgograd, as he also hit the crossbar against the debutants, then went on to seal two captivating efforts that to handed all three points to Gernot Rohr’s side, much to Jos-born fleet-footed attacker’s delight.
Musa’s first of the night came from a superb control and a perfect finish on the half volley; as he took a lovely touch, led the ball out of the path of Iceland defender, Ragnar Sigurdsson, then hit it into the roof of the net.
Iceland responded, driving cross after cross into the box, as their full-backs, Jon Bödvarsson and Hordur Magnusson upped the ante, but Musa again burst inward, took the ball past a defender, changed direction into the box to face on rushing goalkeeper, Halldorsson and smashed the ball aplomb into the net past two opponents on the line.
Incidentally, Musa was on Monday reminiscing over that glorious moment at the Mundial on June 22 in history, football fans earlier celebrated and recognized his terrific brace on that day against Iceland and voted it the most memorable performance of the tournament.
Such it was that world football governing body, FIFA stated back then, after a poll conducted by fans at the Volgograd Arena, where the game took place, that Musa got the majority number of votes, as he secured 80%, while England and Tottenham Hotspur captain, Harry Kane was second with 11%, Egyptian keeper, Essam Al Hadry third on 97% and Jan Benarek fourth at 2%.
Monday brought back fond memories of the delight Musa brought into the heart of Nigerians, as the victory came after the Eagles’ opening loss to Croatia, giving the fans something to cheer for a change and, though the team eventually crashed out after losing 2-1 to Argentina in their next game, the new captain took to social media to celebrate his second brace in World Cup history.
Musa stated: “Wow how time flies. I can’t believe it’s 2 years already since I scored those much needed goals at the World Cup. The tears of joy I shed that day I can never forget. Unarguably one of the best days of my life. Grateful to Allah & everyone of you for the love.”
