Nigeria’s Super Eagles remain relevant, despite failing to qualify for this year’s World Cup in Qatar, as they have been lined up for a friendly against Ecuador, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although the Eagles will not have any need to build-up towards the global soccer showpiece billed to start in November, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been approached to line the squad out for a clash with Ecuador.
Details of the report out of the South American nation indicate that, as part of their build-up to the global football showpiece, the Tricolors will square up against the Super Eagles and the Carthage Eagles.
Consequently, Ecuador will play Nigeria and Tunisia in international friendlies billed for June in the United States of America, according to the team’s coach, Gustavo Alfaro.
The South Americans have been pooled to play against Senegal, Qatar and the Netherlands in Group A at the 2022 World Cup.
In order to have a feel of what to expect against The Lions of Teranga, Ecuador will try the Super Eagles and the North Africans for size.
Also in June, Ecuador will test their might against Mexico while they have lined up warm-up games versus Japan and Saudi Arabia in September, while also making plans for 2014 World Cup runners-up Croatia in Abu Dhabi.
Alfaro, who also said he already has 20 players almost guaranteed a place in his World Cup squad, gave reasons for his choice of playing the Super Eagles and Cathage Eagles, who were the 2004 African champions.
“I asked for African rivals because we can’t play with European teams because they are not available,” the Argentine tactician told ESPN Ecuador.
