Even as fans and analysts across the globe continue to express shock over the Super Eagles’ inability to qualify for this year’s edition of the FIFA World Cup, top shots of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have stressed that the sad development is no fault of theirs.
This charge is being led by the football governing body’s secretary-general, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, who stated emphatically that everyone at the NFF gave the best they could to ensure the Eagles made it successfully to Qatar 2022.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Sanusi further disclosed that the NFF also got adequate support from the ministry of sports in their joint-bid to ensure that Nigeria’s flag is hoisted at the first edition of the FIFA World Cup that will be staged in The Middle East.
The NFF scribe then went on to tender an unreserved apology to the Federal Government and Nigerians in general for the Eagles’ failure to qualify for this year’s Mundial, making it only the second time such would happened since their debut at USA ‘94.
He added that the team failed to qualify despite enormous support of they got from government and fans that turned out in large numbers to fill the 60,491-capacity Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja for Tuesday’s clash with Ghana.
Sanusi posited: “There was nothing the team needed that was lacking. The Government provided necessary support.
“The NFF put all logistics in place with the active support of the Sports Ministry and; Nigerians turned out en masse to support the team.
“The truth is that we left nothing to chance. It is sad that things turned out the way they did.
“Sport is about winning and losing. Nobody wants to lose but sometimes it happens that way.
“We are quite sad that despite playing a draw in Kumasi, the Super Eagles could not win here in Abuja.
“We apologise unreservedly to the Government and people of Nigeria for this non-qualification.”
