The Super Eagles have turned their focus at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations on the task of defeating Tunisia this Sunday in the round of 16.
This much has been disclosed by the team’s media unit, which took to social media to spread a message of optimism about the squad’s chances of excelling at AFCON 2021.
The message, though, is laced with factors that would engender a realisation of their target of clinching a fourth continental title for Nigeria, top of which is total focus on the task ahead.
The match on Sunday will revive memories of how Tunisia stopped Nigeria from going to the 1978 World Cup by beating the Eagles 1-0 in Lagos, with an own goal by Godwin Odiye, as well as victories over the same team via penalties at AFCON 2004, which they hosted.
Recent results between them, though, especially in high-profile qualifiers have gone Nigeria’s way, which, coupled with the fact that The Carthage Eagles have lost two matches at this year’s African football showpiece, lends credence to the verdict that they will fall on Sunday.
In contrast with Tunisia’s losses to Mali and Gambia at the ongoing championship, Nigeria became the only team to win all group matches and they keep improving from game to game, thereby setting their fans in the right mood for another historic victory.
That is the core of the message from the Eagles’ media unit, whose short post on social media is evocative of the confidence rolling through the national team’s camp and the united focus of the players to make history with a fourth African title when they go all the way at the grand finale on February 6th in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
That has set the stage for another round of great expectations from Nigerian football fans and the message also noted the need for more support, as the Eagles now await the arrival of Tunisia’s squad in Garoua for Sunday’s first knock-out match.
The media united posted: “Group stage conquered. On to the next round. Thank you all for your support. We stay focused. #SoarSuperEagles. #Team9jaStrong #TeamNigeria.”
