Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has been praised by fellow shot stopper Mark Travers, labelling the 20-year-old as “excellent” whilst admitting that “it’s a really exciting time” for Ireland’s goalkeepers.
Bazunu joined the Saints from Manchester City earlier in the summer for a fee that could rise to £15million with add-ons, having spent last season on loan at their bitter rivals Portsmouth last term.
The Nigeria-born is one of Europe’s most highly-rated goalkeepers and has started all three of Southampton’s opening Premier League matches of the season, impressing in each.
“It’s a really exciting time,” Travers told the BBC when asked about Ireland’s goalkeeping situation, with Bazunu’s fellow countryman based just 32 miles down the south coast at Bournemouth. “For Gavin as well it is excellent, and he has had a great start to the season with Southampton.
“It is great to have that extra competition for the international shirt as well. That’s always in the back of your mind, and I am sure he will be doing the same for Southampton. You’ve got [Caoimhin] Kelleher at Liverpool as well.
“There is three of us who are at a young age. We know that over the next few years there will be serious competition, so it gives you that added motivation and pushes us all on.”
The 23-year-old added: “To be in the Premier League at 20 is an unbelievable achievement, and the games he has racked up for Ireland as well.
“It’s a really exciting time for him, and he is a top young goalkeeper. I’m sure that he will keep on improving week in week out in the Premier League.”
