Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr is picking positives from Sunday’s 4-0 loss suffered against Mexico by a selection of players from Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), as he posited that he saw some interesting lads among the home-based lot.
Although many Nigerians are wont to critise the home-based players fotr failing to rise to the occasion, after several demands had gone out for their inclusion in the main Eagles’ matches, Rohr stopped short of slamming the lads.
Instead of mocking the lame duck performance by the NPFL stars, the Franco-German tactician, who was present to monitor the match at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in USA, gave thumbs up to the team captained by Enyimba of Aba winger, Anayo Iwuala.
Rohr then went on to hint that he could include some of the players that toiled against El Tri in his main squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers that will begin in September.
Despite the disappointing score, Rohr, who was on Nigeria’s bench for the game in LA, commended the NPFL stars for their efforts and affirmed that he is looking forward to working with some of them in his regular team during the next window.
He concluded that Sunday’s encounter ended up as a good lesson for the home-based players, who stressed showed him that they could play a part in Nigeria’s qualifying campaign to Qatar 2022.
Rohr told NFF media: “This match, we learnt a lot and that’s why we are happy to see this match in these conditions like a normal football game.
“Mexico is number eleven in the world and they showed why. Our young team is the best professional players from Nigeria playing at home.
“They tried too so well, they learnt a lot and I saw some interesting players who could be part of the next World Cup qualifiers in September.”
