SSC Napoli of Italy striker, Victor Osimhen will be gunning for another milestone this Saturday in the Italian Serie A, as he goes for a Nigerian new goals scoring record in his side’s match against Udinese.
Megasportsarena.com reports that on the opposite side of the pitch will be former Watford of England and Granada of Spain striker, Isaac Success, who will also aim for a part of history in the upcoming encounter.
However, the biggest focus will be on Osimhen, who will enter the game with just a goal short of setting a new record of goals from Nigerian players across two seasons in the Serie A, which is currently held by Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins (Obagol).
Although Martins holds the individual record of 11 goals scored by a Nigerian player in one season, he was not able to repeat that feat the next time out, but Osimhen is now close to hitting double digits in two straight seasons with Napoli in the Italian top-flight league.
Obagol ended the 2004-2005 campaign with 11 goals and notched nine the following season, thereby taking him top of the charts among Nigerian players, with Stephen Ayodele Makinwa, Victor Obinna Nsofor and Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo lined up behind him.
However, with nine matches to end the current campaign, Osimhen is set to become the first Nigerian player to hit at least ten goals in two different Serie A seasons.
Last term, which was his debut season in Italy, the Chile 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup top scorer notched ten goals and, with nine already to his name this season, Osimhen will gun for a new Nigerian record on Saturday.
Fortunately for him, the game will be at Napoli’s home ground of Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, heading into which a report by napolicalciolive.com highlighted the implication of Osimhen’s next goal in the Italian top-flight.
