Olympiakos of Greece attacker, Henry Onyekuru and Venezia of Italy defender, Tyronne Ebuehi have both expressed deep levels of happiness at their late inclusions in Nigeria’s squad list for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Although both players gained late invitations due to the absences of the withdrawals of Victor Osimhen and Abdullahi Shehu, Onyekuru and Ebuehi have takne up the gauntlet with enthusiasm.
Megasoportsarena.com gathered as much from the words of Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, who said he was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by both players when he reached out to them to fill in for Osimhen, who is out due to a covid-19 infection, and Shehu, who is injured.
As against initial fears that players called up as an afterthought might feel slighted and opt not to take up belated opportunities in the squad, Onyekuru and Ebuehi quickly acceded to the request extended to them, much to the delight of Eguavoen.
The former defender, skipper and head coach of the Eagles went on to reveal that bold words are now coming from both Ebuehi, who is on loan from Benfica of Portugal, and Onyekuru, as they both told him they are looking forward to playing their personal roles in Nigeria’s search for a fourth continental title, despite stepping at short notice.
It will be a debut AFCON outing for Ebuehi, who missed the 2019 edition, despite playing for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while Onyekuru was in squad that won bronze at the last continental soccer showpiece in Egypt.
Eguavoen told NFF TV: “I felt bad that some of them won’t be around but a decision has to be made – Onuachu, Onyekuru, Tyronne Ebuehi, few other ones I felt bad.
“I like the enthusiasm. I only informed Onyekuru once and he was happy about it. Initially he’s been an integral part of this team.
“As soon as that opening was there, Shehu Abdullahi, reports said he was injured, he was going to be out for 10 days to three weeks and we reached out to Tyronne, he was happy.”
