Ohi Omoijuanfo is the surprise name rivalling the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema for this season’s European Golden Shoe, Megasportsarena.com reports.
The Bayern Munich striker – who won last season’s award after scoring 41 goals last term – currently leads the race to be crowned the leading league scorer across all of Europe’s top divisions this time with 33 goals in the Bundesliga.
His goal tally however is matched by the Nigerian-born Red Star Belgrade forward Omoijuanfo, who scored 27 goals for Norwegian outfit Molde, before moving to the Serbian league in January and scoring six goals in 12 games.
However, the former Molde forward is only fourth in the current Golden Shoe rankings due to the point scoring system used by European Sports Media.
Those scored in the leagues ranked sixth to 21st are multiplied by a factor of 1.5 – which includes the Norwegian and Serbian leagues Omijuanfo has scored his goals in – and the remaining leagues by a factor of one.
That means Lazio star Ciro Immobile and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema – sat in second and third – are ahead of Omoijuanfo, even though they have only scored 26 and 25 league goals respectively in Italy and Spain this season.
However, the duo still trail Lewandowski by some distance, with the Pole’s 33 goals for Bundesliga champions Bayern meaning he is 14 points clear of Immobile – who won the 2019-20 award with 36 goals – and 16 clear of Benzema.
Omoijuanfo however still leads some of Europe’s leading forwards such as Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, who trails him by three-and-a-half points, and Paris Saint-Germain and France striker Kylian Mbappe, whose 22 goals see him with 44 points.
