Nigeria’s team of seven lifters have received accolades from the country’s governing body for the sport, following their exploits at this year’s International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship in Uzbekistan, megasportsarena.com reports.

The rain of accolades came from the president of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Alhaji Ibrahim Abdul, who commended the lifters and officials for returning home with nine medals, despite enduring many sacrifices during almost two months of camping in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The contingent, which competed in Uzbekistan from 7th to 17th December, had five female lifters in Stella Kingsley (-49kg), Adijat Olarinoye (-55kg), Folashade Lawal (-59kg), Ogbonne Eze (-71kg) and Taiwo Liadi (-76kg), as well as two males, Emmanuel Appah (-61kg) and Umoafia Edidiong (-67kg).

Technical director of the federation, Christopher Nwadei, who was assisted by Helen Asemota in the technical crew, confirmed that the weightlifters were given the best camping programme and he had always been confident that they would excel.

Abdul stated: “The federation through the board ensured that you began camping early and I want to appreciate you all for your sacrifices.

“The board which I lead will continue to give you and all other athletes and officials of weightlifting the needed support to excel.”
