Watford of England are bound to end the current season on a sordid note, due to their refusal to allow their in-form Nigerian attacker, Emmanuel Dennis play for the Super Eagles at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations, as fans from his country are raining curses on the team in return.
A special survey by megasportsarena.com revealed that several Nigerian football fans have rained curses rained on The Hornets, with many predicting that they will be relegated from the English Premier League at the end of this season.
The unanimous verdict from a cross-section of Nigerian football fans with varying posts on social media platforms is that Watford will pay the price of stopping Dennis from showing loyalty to his country, after The Hornets’ coach, Claudio Ranieri admitted that his team would struggle without him.
Although Ranieri earlier complained that the invitation letter calling Dennis up for the Super Eagles’ AFCON camp arrived late at Vicarage Road, fans that responded to the saga posited that the Italian football tactician was only seeking excuses to orchestrate his plan of stopping the lad from gracing the African continental soccer showpiece.
One of the posts went further than the Dennis issue, as it touched a similar scenario that played out with SSC Napoli of Italy striker, Victor Osimhen, whose Italian Serie A club also threatened legal action against Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should they force the player to feature at the impending AFCON, despite his ongoing recovery from a face injury he suffered in November.
The hierarchy at Watford was also not left out, as the array of Nigerian fans spreading posts and messages through various social media platforms wondered why the relegation threatened club should go as far as threatening the player if he opted to feature for the Eagles against their desires, thereby showing disdain for the upcoming continental soccer showpiece in Cameroon.
Leading the spree of anathema for The Hornets is Okashi Soup, who tweeted: “All the way from Nigeria, we heartily congratulate Watford on their loss to Tottenham and wish Watford more losses in their future. Happy New Year.”
A similar post came from Dennis O. Adesanoye, who stated: “Mark this tweet, Watford won’t survive relegation this season, while Napoli will end the season without silverware, but Osimhen will score lots of goals for them. We may be in shambles, but don’t mess with the nation, Nigeria.”
A social media respondent indentified as Series Abiodun ‘Baj was also angry ‘with Emmanuel Dennis opting to stay to help Watford instead of playing the AFCON with Nigeria’ and predicted that The Hornets would lose the game versus Spurs.
Rounding off the fury was Lanre Esq, who was short, sharp, direct and straight to the point, as he stated curtly: “I will celebrate Watford’s relegation like Nigeria won the World Cup.”
