Awoniyi, Awaziem In Buoyant Mood Ahead Of Eagles’ Flight To Cameroon

Union Berlin of Germany striker, Taiwo Awoniyi and Boavista of Portugal defender, Chidozie Awaziem are both in buoyant mood ahead of their flight to Cameroon with the Super Eagles, as they join the Nigerian national team for action at the Africa Cup of Nations, megasportsarena.com reports.

Awoniyi and Awaziem, who were among the earliest arrivals at the Eagles’ camp in Abuja since last week Wednesday, both enthused that the team’s preparations will be good enough to see them all the way to the trophy in Cameroon, even as they praised the drills being outlined for them by the interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen.

While Awaziem is hoping on getting a busy spell in the defence line, as he did with the squad of 2019 that won bronze in Egypt, where he played mostly as a right-back, Awoniyi will aim to get into a pivotal spot upfront in what will be his debut at this level.

The former youth international, who was part of the gold winning Golden Eaglets’ squad at UAE 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and bronze outing of the U23 Eagles at Rio 2016 Olympics Games, will aim to make the best of the withdrawals of Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis to cement his senior national status during the tournament in Cameroon.

Awoniyi told NFF TV: “It has been a great session, two times a day, since we resumed the camp, it has been a nice training session with different drills getting us into the rhythm and getting prepared for the games.

“We are getting ready for the AFCON, to do everything for the country and like you said we just finished another training session, getting there step by step, and when the time comes we’ll deliver for the country.”

Awaziem added: “It has been a wonderful atmosphere in the camp. We are preparing with the few players in camp and training sessions have been good, everyone is giving his best and the coach is doing a good job.

“We are hoping to get more players as soon as possible so we can have a full team and prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations properly. It’s the New Year and everyone is positive, we believe we can achieve something great this year.”
