The Super Eagles must be prepared to face a surprise from Guinea-Bissau at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations, according to the Spanish-speaking West African country’s number one goalkeeper, Jonas Mendes, megasportsarena.com reports.
While casting a look ahead of the upcoming group clash between both countries at the impending continental soccer showpiece in Cameroon, Mendes stressed that every country heading to AFCON 2021 must beware of threat from his team.
Although Guinea-Bissau are in only their third appearance at the competition and they could not go beyond the first round in their previous two outings, Mendes believes they have what it takes to shock the giants.
While all odds will be on Nigeria’s side when the three-time African champions wrap up group play versus Guinea-Bissau at Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua on January 19, Mendes said everyone is in for a surprise, because he believes The Djurtus have what it takes to win that game and even do well altogether at the competition.
Guinea-Bissau will be competing in their third successive tournament in Cameroon., where they find themselves in a tough group with Nigeria, Egypt and Sudan, but Mendes is banking on heroics from AS Monaco’s Pele, Vitória Setúbal’s Frédéric Mendy, Plymouth Argyle’s Panutche Camara, Porto’s Nanu and Sochaux’s Steve Ambri.
The team coached by Baciro Candé will also aim to make their mark at AFCON 2021 after failing to advance from the group stage in the last two editions and Mendes has sent a strong message to Nigeria’s team, officials and fans that it would be wise not to underestimate Guinea-Bissau.
Mendes, who is currently clubless, told Filgoal: “Beware of facing us, because everyone thinks Guinea-Bissau is a small team. We will surprise a lot of people, we are capable of that, so you have to take us seriously.”
