Leon Balogun Still In Doubt For Nigeria’s Squad To Africa Cup Of Nations

Glasgow Rangers of Scotland defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun remains a huge doubt for the Super Eagles’ squad to next month’s Africa Cup of Nations, as he is yet to fully recover from a nagging injury, megasportsarena.com reports.

Though the former Fortuna Dusseldorf, Darmstadt and SV Mainz of Germany stopper, who has also played for Bridgton and Wigan Athletic of England, has been out for over two weeks, he is still going through the process of rehabilitation.

Latest information about his injury status now reveals that Balogun faces a late fitness test, in order to ascertain if he would be available for The Gers’ squad that will battle St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Boxing Day.

Heading into that match, though, Rangers’ coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst expressed optimism that he would be able to include Balogun, who has missed the last eight games contested by The Light Blues in all competitions.

That has been sequel to an injury he suffered during a League Cup loss to Hibernian on November 21, following which Super Eagles’ rookie, Calvin Ugbegbulam Bassey has stepped in for Balogun and gave a good account of himself.

Though Bassey appears to have cemented his spot in the squad, after helping the club keep six clean sheets since Van Bronckhorst took over the managerial reins, the Dutch football tactician is still keeping tabs on Balogun.

Keeping to his style of enthusiasm for all players in his squad, Van Bronckhorst went on to speak in glowing terms about Balogun, ahead of The Saints’ visit on Sunday, especially after the Nigerian stopper took part in Friday’s training session.

Van Bronckhorst disclosed: “Leon is joining us today with the session so we have to see if he is fit enough to be available for Sunday.”
