Everton of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi has gone all philosophical, as he penned a very emotional message in the wake of his inability to save the Super Eagles from a round of 16 ouster at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Megasportsarena.com reports that his exuberance and zeal for glory led him into committing an unnecessary foul in Sunday’s game versus Tunisia and he ended up getting a reed, which compounded Nigeria’s woes in the game.
The Eagles, who won all their group matches and had been tipped to rabble rouse over the initially hapless Tunisians into the quarter-finals at AFCON 2021, eventually lost the game, much to Iwobi’s anguish.
He subsequently hurried into his cocoon, hiding away from public glare and even deactivated his platform, as he mourned how a yellow card issued him by the referee was upgrade to red by VAR, following his stamp on Youssef Msakni five minutes after getting off Nigeria’s bench.
However, following three days of being incommunicado, Iwobi, who made four appearances, including one start, logging 143 minutes in total at the ongoing AFCON, is now back in the public domain.
He marked his return by inking what appears to be an emotionally worded poem, as the former Arsenal of England dazzler enthused that he and his colleagues in the Nigerian team will bounce back to achieve better results in future and thanked their fans for sticking with them.
Iwobi stated via Instagram: “Moments of joy can quickly turn into pain and anguish. As much as it’s a part of football, we came for more.
“Our fans who shared these moments with us both in Cameroon and across the world deserved more!
“The beauty of the game is the next moment of jubilation is never too far round the corner. We will be back to fight for our nation, stronger.
“We owe it to you, and I owe it to myself. Thank you for all the words of support and encouragement – it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
