Olympiakos of Greece summer signing, Henry Onyekuru has described his debut with the Greek Super League side as a ‘blessed day,’ as it ended in victory for his side, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although he only played as substitute in the encounter, Onyekuru admitted he was excited to get some minutes under his feet and be part of the climax that saw his team snatch all three points.
The 24-year-old winger-cum-attacker added that he was happy seeing his side claim the advantage heading into the return leg of their UEFA Europa League fixture with Slovan Bratislava, following their 3-0 win on Thursday.
Onyekuru, who has previously played for Aspire Football Academy of Lagos, KAS Eupen and RSC Anderlecht of Belgium as well as a contract with Everton of England, for which he never played, arrived just last month from AS Monaco of France.
It what appears to be a turnaround from the nightmare he faced min a third spell at Galatasaray of Turkey last season, Onyekuru was introduced in the 74th minute for Mathieu Valbuena and Onyekuru disclosed that he was excited that his side took the advantage heading into the return leg.
However, it was Guinea player, Aguibou Camara who put Olympiakos ahead in the 37th minute, before Senegal’s Pape Cisse added the second in the 52nd minute for a 2-0 half-time lead at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
In the 68th minute, Olympiakos were 3-0 up after defender Vasil Bozhikov turned the ball into his own net a sweeping cross from Cisse and seven minutes later, following which Onyekuru went on for his debut.
Though he did not find the back of the net, Onyekuru created two chances which were not converted by Cisse, and also watched his powerful shot from outside the 18-yard box go inches wide, but he eventually revealed delight with his debut and promised his best in the second leg.
Onyekuru, who will hope to start in the return leg on Thursday, before they start their domestic campaign against Lamia next Friday, posted afterwards on social media: “Blessed to play my first minutes for my new club. We walked away with the victory and looking forward to the second leg!🔴⚪️.”
