Femi Azeez Set For A New Reading Deal

Reading’s head of football operations Mark Bowen has confirmed that the club have made contract offers to Femi Azeez.

Femi Azeez was voted as Reading’s Rookie of the Year for 2021/22. He acted as the academy’s poster boy for the campaign and made the most appearances (14) of any player in the squad aged 21 or under.

Megasportsarena.com reports that the player’s deal with the Royals is set to expire today (July 1), when he will become a free agent and be allowed to sign for any club he wants.

Bowen confirmed that they want to keep the Nigeria-born, as he revealed that offers are on the table, and he seemed confident Azeez would sign.

“With Femi Azeez, I’d like to think we are very close.

“We have made an offer and we are waiting for him and his family to make a decision to hopefully make sure his future is here. Femi has been training every day so far in pre-season.”

Azeez was on the fringes of the first-team last season, making just 13 appearances.

Azeez has shown that they have a part to play and he would be a useful member of Paul Ince’s squad if he wants to remain with the Royals.

As Reading started the season in miserable form in August, Azeez gave fans something to cheer about with his goals against Preston North End and Bristol City.

His back post finish against the Lilywhites was particularly enjoyable as it set the team on their way to their first win of the season and his celebration – a knee slide coupled with a beaming smile in front of Club 1871 – is a contender for picture of the year.

It told of a player living his dream after a less than conventional route to professional football. Azeez only joined Reading at the age of 18, having played in non-league with local club Northwood and then Wealdstone after being let go by Watford at 14 years old.
