Racing Genk of Belgium striker, Cyriel Dessers has denied that he is harbouring thoughts of a bitter rivalry with Nigerian compatriot, Paul Ebere Onuachu and other forwards in the Jupiler League club, as he says they already have a ‘recipe’ for togetherness in the team, megasportsarena.com reports.
Speaking against the back drop of him and Onuachu both scoring in Friday’s league tie, during which he got an assist from his lanky teammate, Dessers stressed that they can all play together and blend for the good of the team.
He went on to admit that Onuachu is currently ahead of him on the perking order of strikers at Genk, but pointed out that it simply because the tall lad got to the club before him and has settled in faster.
Nonetheless, Dessers insists there is no malice among the strikers and declared emphatically that he can play alongside Onuachu in attack, as he cited their tight understanding in the 4-0 demolition of KAS Eupen during a Belgian First Division A clash on Friday.
Dessers got his first start in the league since August 30, when he went the distance in the 2-1 loss to Club Brugge, and the former Heracles Almelo of Holland top scorer justified the coach’s trust by doubling Genk’s advantage with a right-footed shot three minutes into the second half.
Before this fixture, the 25-year-old Dessers had not scored from open play, with his two strikes coming from the spot in matches with Zulte Waregem and Beerschot V.A, such that he was thrilled to hit target on Friday, especially as it came assisted by his compatriot and strike partner, Onuachu.
Dessers told HLN: “From the day I stepped in here, Paul already clicked. It doesn’t feel like we are competitors. I think we can also offer a lot together on the field. His goal in Zulte Waregem came after I won a duel and it was the other way around. That seems like a good recipe.”
