Team Nigeria’s table tennis squad went on rampage against Ghana on Friday as both countries clashed in what was dubbed the ‘Jollof Derby’ at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Africa’s number one Aruna Quadri smashed Ghana’s Asante Emmanuel 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-6) and Omotayo Olajide also dismissed Ghanaian Abrefa Derek in the straight sets 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 in the two singles matches played.
Omeh Amadi and Omotayo Olajide also defeated Commey Emmanuel and Abrefa Derek 11-7, 11-3, 11-9.
Nigerian women however lost their Round 2 matches to Singapore.
Oribamise Esther lost to Feng Tianwei 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 and Edem Offiong was also beaten 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 by Zeng Jian in the singles event.
They were also despatched in the doubles event. In the doubles event, Fatimo Bello and Offiong Edem lost 11-7, 11-4, 11-1 to Jingyi Zhou and Jion Zeng.
