Glasgow Rangers of Scotland defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun has received plaudits from his club’s coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, despite playing as a substitute in The Gers’ victory at the weekend, megasportsarena.com reports.
Balogun played as a sub alongside Joe Aribo, while Calvin Bassey Ughegbulam got 90 minutes under his boots at left-back, but it was the former SV Mainz of Germany as ex-Wigan Athletic and Brighton of England stopper that received the coach’s applause.
Statistics show that Rangers have not conceded for six games in a row with Balogun on the pitch, a run that started in the 3-0 loss at Celtic when the Super Eagles defender got off the bench at halftime to shore up the defence.
Such it was that van Bronckhorst disclosed that he sent Balogun on in the closing minutes of his side’s 2-1 road win over Dundee on Sunday because he sought to protect the narrow lead.
The Light Blues came from a goal down at halftime to beat Dundee and record a third successive win in the Scottish Premiership.
Christie Elliott headed in a cross to the back post to break the deadlock in the sixth minute and Rangers had to wait until the 64th minute for the equaliser when Aaron Ramsey chested the ball in for his first goal for Rangers.
Connor Goldson volleyed home the winner from 12 yards in the 84th minute and three minutes later Balogun replaced Alfredo Morelos for his 28th appearance of the season in all competitions.
Van Bronckhorst said: “We could bring Leon as well for defensive security in the end, so overall we are more than pleased with the three points.”
