AFCON: FIFA Hands EPL Clubs A Major Boost

English Premier League clubs have been handed a major boost over AFCON stars after FIFA decision.

The Premier League teams will have their African internationals available for the first domestic game of 2022 after world soccer governing body, FIFA confirmed clubs can delay the release of players.

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed clubs can delay the release of players to the Africa Cup of Nations until January 3.

The news a major boost for 16 English Premier League teams, who will now have their African internationals available for the first domestic game of 2022.

The delay wasn’t expected, as the AFCON starts in Cameroon on January 9. The final is set to take place on February 6.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Emmanuel Dennis, Thomas Partey, Eric Bailly, Riyad Mahrez, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy are among the 40 internationals expected to play in the tournament.

Premier League squads are expected to be stretched over the next six weeks due to the AFCON and increasing Covid rates in the UK.
