Chelsea of England youngster, Derrick Abu is rivaling four of the club’s top players in the race for The Blues’ player of the month award, megasportsarena.com reports.
To get the nod for the London-based English Premier League club’s first best goal of the new season, Abu will have to overcome equally exciting efforts from the quartet of Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz, Marcos Alonso and Hakim Ziyech.
Also listed in the race for the award alongside Abu and the four senior Chelsea players are Trevoh Chalobah, female team star, Pernille Harder and under-23 squad member, Harvey Vale.
The Nigerian-born lad will now keep his fingers crossed and hope to be declared winner, after The Blues’ media unit reeled out names of the nominees, and the dark-skinned right-back made the cut.
A report by allnigeriasoccer.com added: “Abu scored the pick of the bunch as Chelsea demolished Tottenham Hotspur 7-2 in an U18 Premier League fixture on August 21.
“Three minutes after coming off the bench, the 17-year-old’s brilliant shot from outside the box, all the way through the crowd, ended up in the back of the net.
“It was his first competitive goal for Chelsea’s youth teams and it came in his 13 appearance in the U18 Premier League since debuting in the division against Crystal Palace in October 2020.
“The 2003-born defender signed a scholarship deal with the Blues in the summer of 2020, before inking his first professional contract in January 2021.
“Abu joined the Blues at U11 level after he was spotted by a Chelsea scout when he was playing for local club Coezer FC at a tournament in Spain.”
