Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus defender, Abdullahi Shehu has downplayed the injury he copped in action with his club last weekend, as he says it was just a minor knock, megasportsarena.com reports.

While pointing out that he was replaced in the 35th minute of the game, as he struggled to keep going, the former Sokoto United, Kano Pillars and Anorthosis Famagusta of Cyprus utility player said it was just a precautionary measure.

He went on to affirm that he will be fully fit when he arrives at the Super Eagles’ camp in Abuja on Wednesday, with a view towards joining the team out to Cameroon on January 5th for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 28-year-old fair-skinned versatile lad, who was part of the bronze-winning home-based Eagles to CHAN 2014 in South Africa and U23 team that won same silverware at Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, stressed that he is now fully focused on the AFCON hurdle.

Having featured in all but one of Nicosia’s league matches this campaign, starting 12 and helped his club stay seventh with 20 points from 14 games, nine behind leaders Apollon Limassol, Shehu enthused that he will be able to better with the Eagles in Cameroon.

While promising to be among the early arrivals to the Eagles’ camp in Abuja this Wednesday, Shehu added that he is determined to make the best of his second appearance at the African soccer showpiece, with high hope of going further than bronze won at the last edition in Egypt.

He stressed that nothing will stop him from performing well for the Eagles and, though he also admitted that losing his last match in Cyprus before travelling out of the tiny island nation was an emotional blow for him, he parried reports about the injury he copped on the day.

Shehu told AOIFootball.com: “It’s not a serious injury, I just had a knock on my left thigh but I am fine the substitution was just precautionary.

“Not a good way to end the year because I would have wanted us to get a victory over our fierce rivals. Now I shift my focus to the national team. I can’t wait to see the guys again.

“I would arrive in Nigeria and get set for the camp proper. I always a good feeling to be called up by your nation. I am always honored to play and represent Nigeria.”
