Leicester City of England duo, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi have received plaudits from their English Premier League club, following the sterling performances thry both put up for Nigeria in Saturday’s victory over Sudan, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Iheanacho was replaced before the final whistle of the Super Eagles’ second game at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, and could not repeat his match-winning goal that sank Egypt last Tuesday, he was hailed alongside Ndidi, who got 90 minutes under his boots.
Iheanacho did come close to scoring during Saturday’s game in Garoua and looked better placed to strike had Joe Aribo allowed him connect a loose ball midway through the second half, before bowing out to team captain, Ahmed Musa.
The better hauil of statistics, though, went to Ndidi, as gthe former Nath Boys of Lagos and Racing Genk of Belgium holding midfiedler was never found wanting in key areas and played the role of a strong bulwark right in front of the back-four.
Ndidi’s efforts, seamless mobility, linking role between defence and attack as well as his timely tackles proved to be one crucial reason behind Nigeria’s victory over Sudan on Saturday.
Goals from Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi and Moses Simon was enough to help the Super Eagles grab their second win in Cameroon despite a 70th-minute goal from Sudan’s Walieldin Khedr.
The victory was also b uoyed by the fact that Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen did not make any changes to the starting XI that defeated Egypt on Tuesday and it did not take long for them to break the deadlock.
However, shortly after Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Nwakali replaced Iheanacho and Aribo respectively, Sudan got a penalty, after a VAR review showed that Ola Aina pulled and stepped on Mustafa Karshoum in a corner-kick situation.
Nonetheless, that only changed the story line without altering the points earned by Nigeria, much to the delight of Ndidi and Iheanacho’s club, which took to social media to celebrate with their lads on their night of joy.
Leicester’s media unit tweeted with their verified handle @LCFC: “#lcfc’s @Ndidi25 and @67Kelechi starred for Nigeria in a 3-1 win over Sudan as the Super Eagles soar into the last-16 at #AFCON2021.”
