Fulham of England defender, Tosin Adarabioyo has admitted he is still agonising over the own goal he scored that prevented his side from getting victory against Derby County in the English Championship.
On a night the former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers’ Nigerian-born stopper had been seeking glory with his teammates against The Rams, it all turned round full circle when he netted against his own side.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Adarabioyo’s 73rd minute howler meant from behind to beat Fulham 2-1, delaying the confirmation of automatic promotion for the Cottagers and keeping their slim survival hopes alive.
Following Luton’s win over Nottingham Forest earlier on Good Friday, Marco Silva’s men would have secured a return to the English Premier League after one season away with victory, which they looked set to do when Fabio Carvalho tucked in the opener after 20 minutes.
Ultimately, Wayne Rooney’s men were the better side after the break and, after teenage striker Luke Plange steered home an equaliser in the 51st minute, Adarabioyo’s own goal sent the home fans wild and secured all three points for the hosts.
With 16 minutes to play, Derby took the lead for the first time. An unorthodox flick from Nathan Byrne released Tom Lawrence, whose ball across the penalty area – intended for Plange – was inadvertently prodded over the line by the unfortunate Adarabioyo.
Fulham pressed to try and salvage something from the game late on, but some late heroics from Allsop, who denied three players in quick succession, ensured The Cottagers’ wait continued.
Malcolm Ebiowei was taken off by Rooney in the 97th minute of play, while Franklyn Ebosele had gone on earlier in the 75th, as Derby rode the tide and contained the game till the final whistle, thereby leaving Adarabioyo in agony at the final whistle, knowing his error stole at least a draw from his side.
While the defeat means Fulham have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, but still lead second-placed Bournemouth by nine points, Derby climb up to 22nd, nine points from safety with four games to play.
