Union Berlin of Germany striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has admitted he is targeting yet another goal at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, megasportsarena.com reports.
Speaking against the backdrop of the ‘freak’ header that fetched him his first senior goal for Nigeria during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Sudan, Awoniyi acknowledged that he felt on top of the world.
He stated further that it is a privilege and honour for him to be playing for Nigeria at the continental soccer showpiece in Paul Biya’s country and, since his job for Nigeria is to score goals, he wants to get more as the competition drags on.
His next opportunity should come against Guinea Bissau on Wednesday, when the Eagles roll out for their last match of Group D in Garoua, ahead of which Awoniyi has set his sight on making hay once again.
He parried insinuations that he felt relieved that he eventually got his name into Nigeria’s record books with the uncanny header against Sudan, but conceded that he must put in ore effort to keep the momentum going.
Incidentally, the product of Imperial Football Academy of Odogbolu, Ogun State took a pretty long time before he got his first senior goal for Nigeria, as he played thee matches and got action for 161 minutes in the Eagles’ jersey until he finally hit target on Saturday.
Awoniyi is now thinking of stepping up much further, starting with Wednesday’s game against Guinea Bissau, as he declared: “It is my job to score for the country.
“For me, it is a great privilege. Many players have done it also. Every player is happy to be here, because it is a great privilege and honor to represent your country.
“It is a great privilege to represent the country and for you to be here is just believing in your dream and to achieve it is something you should be happy and proud of.”
