The date of the first leg of the final World Cup qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Ghana’s Black Stars is yet to be confirmed, as the fellow-Anglophone West African country is yet to pick one of two possible options.
Megasportsarena.com gathered on good authority that Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to communicate to their Nigerian counterparts their choice between Wednesday, 23rd March or Thursday, 24th March.
This is despite confirmation that came on Tuesday that the Eagles will host the Black Stars for the second leg in Abuja on the 27th of March, in a reverse fixture that would decide winner of their final round qualification series for Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The encounter, which is scheduled to hold at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, will see the Nigerian squad tango their rivals from the fellow-Anglophone West African nation on Sunday, 27th March in a potentially explosive and decisive match.
A report by the NFF’s media unit noted that the Eagles got to the play-off round after topping a pool that included Cape Verde, Liberia and Central African Republic while Ghana emerged from the section that had South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
The report added: “Nigeria Football Federation on Tuesday confirmed the date of the reverse leg to Confederation of African Football.
“With Ghana Football Association now to confirm whether the first leg inside the Cape Coast Stadium will be on Wednesday, 23rd March or Thursday, 24th March.
“The final leg encounter will be the 59th clash at senior level between both West African giants in a chequered 71 –year rivalry.
“(It) will also be the first game involving the Super Eagles at the country’s premium sporting arena since the Eagles defeated Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane 3-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on 15th October 2014.”
