Nigeria’s national team, Super Eagles’ camp is expected to open this Wednesday in Abuja, for the beginning of preparations towards the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, megasportsarena.com reports.
With less than two weeks now left before the competition commences on January 9 in Yaoundé, players that made the Eagles’ final squad list of 28 are expected to converge on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in midweek.
However, with league matches still holding in England and Scotland, as the festive spree reaches a crescendo in both countries, players plying their trade in the British nations have been exempted till January3.
This much was revealed in a press statement by the communications department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), while unveiling the identities of all 28 players that have been officially registered for the upcoming AFCON.
A report by allnigeriasocer.com disclosed: “The Nigerian Federation have instructed all the invited players with the exception of the Premier League players to arrive the training camp on December 29, 2021.
“Rangers duo Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun could have been part of the group of players to join the training camp next year but the Scottish Premiership meeting with Celtic earlier scheduled for January 2 has been postponed and shifted to February 2.
“Watford duo William Troost-Ekong and Emmanuel Dennis, Leicester City pair Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, Everton winger Alex Iwobi and Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka should be available for their clubs’ festive fixtures as they are expected to start arriving on January 3.
“Villarreal, CD Leganes, SD Huesca and Almeria could delay the arrival of Chukwueze, Omeruo, Nwakali and Sadiq respectively as their clubs have matches on January 2-3.”
