Lille Metropole of France striker, Victor Osimhen has gained words of praise from one of his club’s former stars and ex-Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, who says he was proud seeing his compatriot net another spectacular goal last weekend, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although what turned out to be Osimhen’s 13th goal of the season from the club he joined in the summer from Sporting Charleroi of Belgium was not good enough to save Lille from losing 2-1 away to Olympique Marseille, Enyeama stressed that he was happy for the youngster.
The Eagles’ former captain and most capped Nigerian player ever, with 101 appearances to his name, added that he is equally excited with the giant strides being made within a short while by the 21-year-old former VfL Wolfsburg of Germany striker.
Enyeama added that the Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup top scorer and gold medalist is already performing and scoring at a very high level, which occurred yet again on Sunday, when Osimhen controlled a neat pass from Jonathan Bamba to strike home another goal for The Great Danes.
Though Andre Villas-Boas’ side still went on to seal maximum points, with Reinildo Mandava’s own goal and Dario Benedetto’s winner, Enyeama reserved special words of praise for his young compatriot, who is now three goals behind leading scorer Wissam Ben Yedder.
Enyeama admits he was filled with awe, seeing Osimhen finish superbly in the 51st minute, and took his tally to 13 goals in the Ligue 1 in the process, and now needs to score just four more in the remaining 13 games to surpass Victor Nosa Ikpeba’s record of 16 goals which he set during the 1997/98 season in Ligue 1, while playing for AS Monaco.
Ikpeba tallied 12 goals in 25 matches 22 years ago, while Osimhen has 13 from the same number of matches, and Nigeria’s new kid on the block will also aim to outdo ‘The Prince of Monaco’ as the top scoring player from his country with a French club in all competitions of a single season.
The 1997 African Footballer of The Year his a total of 23 goals in the 1997/98 season, which is currently five more than Osimhen’s haul so far this season, but Enyeama is of a view that the lad to flaunt is already doing well at his former club and showing signs of better things to come.
Enyeama posted on social media: “Great call from deep by Victor Osimhen. Very good pass by Bamba, but the finish from Osimhen very high level. Proud of you Victor.”
