Enugu Rangers International underlined their quest for the Nigeria Professional Football League title with a crushing 3-0 defeat of champions Akwa United at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
After a barren first half, Samuel Pam opened the scoring for Rangers in the 55th minute, Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled the lead in the 70th minute before substitute Shedrack Asiegbu put the icing on the cake with the third goal in the 90th minute.
The Flying Antelopes are now third on the table with 31 points from 18 matches, eight points behind leaders Rivers United.
“It was a good match which we came here to win and got the win, but I wished it was another team we beat in their home like this and not Akwa United as I still feel a part of me here in Uyo,” said Rangers coach Abdul Maikaba.
“They gave us a good fight but we had our plans coming into this game and it worked well for us.
“No doubt, the pitch helped us to carry out our plans and I am happy we got the win to keep us within a distance from the pacesetters.”
Meanwhile, Lobi Stars have dismissed coach Eddy Dombraye following their 2-1 loss at home Abia Warriors.
Elsewhere, Enyimba fans called for the sack of coach Finidi George after the Aba Elephants were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Plateau United.
