Super Eagles’ substantive captain, Ahmed Musa is set to get his first at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Henry Onyekuru against Guinea Bissau on Wednesday, megasportsaerena.com gathered.
Also bound to get starting roles with the Eagles in their last group game are Francis Odinaka Uzoho in goal, Semi Ajayi in central defence and Frank Ogochukwu Onyeka in midfield.
This is sequel to feelers emanating from the Eagles’ base camp in Garoua, Cameroon, where the team’s interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has already started paying attention to fringe players in his squad.
He earlier spoke of giving playing time to those among the players that have not been tested so far at the championship in Cameroon and then matched action with words by concentrating on them fully during Sunday’s first training session.
It was meant to be recovery drills for those that started or entered Saturday’s game against Sudan, but ‘Egu’ left it for one of his assistants and former skipper of the side, Joseph Ikpo Yobo.
He then turned fully to the possibles, among whom were also Tyronne Ebuehi and Peter Olayinka, as if to suggest that he is preparing them tactically and psychologically for the task of lining out against The Flames on Wednesday.
That would surely mean Musa wearing the skipper’s band from the start, while those in the main team take a rest ahead of next week’s round if 16 clash with a third placed team.
It would also mean opportunities for Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Nwakali, Chidera Ejuke and Umar Sadiq, who have already played as substitutes at this year’s competition, to also stage bold claims to starting roles in the next game.
Their chances would surely be boosted by a victorious outing, which would mark a milestone for Eguavoen as the only Nigerian coach to win all three group matches in two separate editions of AFCON, having enacted same feat at Egypt 2006.
