Glasgow Rangers of Scotland centre back, Leon Aderemi Balogun has received a tag over high value added to his name in The Gers’ squad, following his performance against Celtic, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although his side lost the game 3-0 away to their fellow-Glasgow-based rivals, Rangers’ coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst gave Balogun thumbs up for his gritty efforts in the mid-week encounter, though the central defender played as a second half substitute.
Balogun went on in the 46th minute of play and lined out as a right-back before moving into his favourite position, where he put up a performance that left Van Bronckhorst filled with sheer delight.
In spite of the heavy defeat that saw Celtic climb their Old Firm rivals into top spot in the Scottish Premiership, ‘GvB’ opined that Balogun gave a good account of himself, as his side did not concede any goal in the second half.
The gaffer also noted that it was a solid performance from a player that had been out injured for a long while, as Balogun had been involved in only one league game for Rangers over the last two months.
He only recently fully recovered from a back injury that forced him to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but he returned with aplomb on Wednesday and expertly partnered Connor Goldson in central defence, much to the awe of Van Bronckhorst.
Van Bronckhorst stated: “He would have played before but people forget how many center backs I had available, how many center backs were injured, Leon is one of them.
“He has been out of the team, he just came back couple of weeks ago but he showed on Wednesday how strong he is and how valuable he can be in the squad.”
