Glasgow Rangers of Scotland duo of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey had it tough on personal levels on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League, as the first of the two failed to score while his colleague netted an own goal.
However, megasportsarena.com can report that, in spite of the miss by Aribo and nightmare that hit Bassey, The Gers managed to escape with an away draw from Olympique Lyon of France.
It came courtesy gritty effort that helped the Scottish Premiership champions ended Lyon’s perfect record in the Europa League group stage with 1-1 finish at Groupama Stadium.
Rangers’ coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst made six changes to the line-up that defeated Dundee last weekend, as he started Aribo from the bench, while Bassey again filled the spot of fellow-Nigerian and recuperating defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun as centre back.
A report by allnigeriasoccer.com added: The Light Blues started the game brightly, were able to soak up the pressure that Lyon produced and were rewarded for their efforts in the 42nd minute when Scott Wright opened the scoring.
There was an element of fortune in Wright’s goal as his effort from the edge of the area was deflected beyond the reach of Lyon goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck.
Lypn equalised three minutes into the second half when Rayan Cherki found space in the right channel and fired a low shot across goal that was going wide until Bassey steered it past his own goalkeeper.
Aribo maintained his involvement in every game in the group stage when he hopped off the bench to replace Kemar Roofe with seventeen minutes to go.
The Super Eagles midfielder very nearly gave Rangers all three points in stoppage time but missed the target.
Rangers were already through to the knockout rounds of the Europa League before their trip to France and ended the group stage in second place with eight points.
