Leicester City of England attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho has been slammed by former Arsenal defender, Martin Keown, who was critical of how the Super Eagles’ star missed a gilt-edged chance in his side’s shock loss to lower division side Nottingham Forest.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that Keown was critical of how Iheanacho missed a glorious scoring opportunity during the first half of Leicester’s 4-1 defeat on Sunday in the English FA Cup, as the Super Eagles’ star failed to open scoring after just six minutes.
The former defender opined that Iheanacho should have done better when freed right in front of Forest’s goal, but his shot flew wide after he was set up by Luke Thomas, following which the Cup holders paid the price.
The Foxes soon imploded, as Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Joe Worrall scored three goals in the space of nine minutes to give Forest a 3-0 lead after 31 minutes and Leicester could not get back into the game, though Iheanacho later made amends.
That became too little too late, when he capitalised on a loose ball and finished into an empty net from a tight angle to reduce the deficit in the 40th minute, but there was no comeback for Brendan Rodgers’ team.
In contract with Leicester’s struggles, their in-form opponents from the English Championship, who knocked perennial winners, Arsenal out in the third round did better with an outstanding display in defence.
Iheanacho, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi and Ademola Lookman all got starting spots for the game in which, after a tentative start, Nottingham roared strong and, though Iheanacho gave The Foxes hope five minutes before half-time, the holders could not conjure a revival.
Rodgers’ side were not able to get any sort of rhythm in the second half and their demoralizing afternoon continued when Spence slipped the ball past Ward to make it 4-1 just past the hour.
Ndidi took over Leicester’s captain’s armband from Youri Tielemans, as the Belgian was yanked off with 25 minutes remaining, but the Super Eagles’ star was yellow carded in the 58th minute for a rough challenge on Zinckernagel.
Iheanacho’s strike against Forest took his haul to 15 goals in 21 English FA Cup games combined for Manchester City and Leicester, but his early miss on Sunday could have made it more to his name, especially as Keown stressed that the Eagles’ ace should have hit target.
Keown said on BBC One: “The full-backs are going to tested. That should have been a better finish by Iheanacho. Really positive from Forest. They really go after teams early but Leicester work it really well down the left hand side.”
